Goodbye sweet summer...

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.”

Ecclesiastes 3:1

It’s that time of year - where we’re all complaining that it’s 82 degrees and super humid in October…and then all it takes is one night……

One sneaky, windy, night and you wake up to cold, rainy, overcast, fall….and you instantly feel remorseful of all those hateful summer thoughts you had two nights ago as you dialed the air conditioning up…

Ha! Summer is so sweet and warm, I’ve always associated it with fun, happy, veggie garden, barbecues, bonfires….and sweet, sweet flowers!

But Fall…. I will revel in the spicy fall and all it’s goodness that comes with it!

I don’t know about you, but the color changes in leaves always draw my amazement, like I’ve never seen it happen before. I also secretly want to create those wax “masterpieces” I did as a child. You know, where you pick pretty leaves placing them on wax paper, followed by a random assortment of wax shavings from crayons. Then you place another layer of wax paper, iron and hang in the window. Ahh happy childhood memories….

Oh and I have to mention homeowner pride becomes a real issue, as our grass finally looks like the rest of the neighborhood since there’s no scorching heat zapping the little green life out of it! Now we could always water it in the heat of July….but, moving on…

With fall upon us, and the prepping for winter, you tuck in your little garden beds and bring in that last veggie garden harvest…and winter prep begins…..

Now before I hit the apple orchard with the best of them…wearing my plaid flannel shirt and brown tall boots, drinking/eating pumpkin everything, and toughing it out in a cute vest when I should’ve grabbed my puffy coat (but who wears puffy coats to an apple orchard?)…. here’s my FALL To-Do list…for today…

1) Mix up some delicious essential oils together to get the smell of my home to reflect something between a Yankee candle store and apple orchard….just no headache here….

2) Bring in outdoor furniture - My mom scored this amazing teak-look-alike wood set last year, which instantly became part of my morning oasis and devotion location….So, part of the prep to get it set for winter (and prob should have done mid-summer) is to moisturize the wood with teak oil. This is pretty simple - if anyone needs some, I ordered far too much on Amazon, I could literally take care of my whole neighborhood’s furniture! Next, wash those pretty summer pillows - (I scored one of the stripe guys at Goodwill for $3! It’s Ralph Lauren….[pats on the back])

3) Prep those plant-ies…and our sad, sad tree - While I am a wanna-be-green-thumb, I do not profess to hold the corner on any plant care, but from consulting my Oma (grandma) and mom and the internet, I’ve pruned my plants, pulled up my straggly marigolds, indulged in some colorful mums, and trimmed my rose bush. Bringing in garden hoses and such equipment is prob a good idea…ours survived last year outside (I imagine much better gardeners/homeowners cringing everywhere)…

Then there’s our tree - it was plated with the home and I believe is the only one of its kind on our street. But with that being said…it’s prob because everyone else’s already died, since our house was one of the last to be built. There is a terrible crack on one side, it has all signs of struggle going on..but yet somehow it tries to send out little shoots for a fresh beginning. I’ve visited a few nursery’s and so far the consensus is to scrap it and start over. Since I priced out most trees I liked I quickly realized I could get that new slip-cover for the sofa or a tree. So hang in there little tree-guy! I believe in you!

4) The Garage!!!! -  Ya’ll (I feel slightly entitled to use this saying as I have a decent amount of Southern-born friends and I’m living much more south then I ever have…so hear my southern twang!)…the garage is MY workspace! It’s a sad conglomeration of half-finished furniture I’ve purchased at yard sales, Goodwill, and picked up for FREE off the side of the road (I met the owners, they’re super nice).

My sweet husband has never once complained about parking outside…but this morning there was a frantic race for us to find where I put the window scrapers, since it frosted last night and the cars were parked outside…..So I should prob get on that…finish up my DIY and sweep out our garage.

Anyone else tired…..
